The Indian association of Prosthetists and Orthotists is a national professional organization formed in 1987 by the prosthetists and orthotists for the overall growth and development of the prosthetic and orthotic field as per the international standards. The aims of the association is to serve its members as well as public by increasing the importance of the prosthetists and orthotists in the nation’s health care system and by fostering advancements in prosthetic and orthotic education, practice and research. 

 

The association is involved in mass awareness campaigns from time to time to highlight prosthetic and orthotic field so that quackery can be eliminated. The association empowers prosthetic and orthotic professionals with their privileges and duties. The association create healthy environment for ethical prosthetic and orthotic practice.  The association co-ordinates with rehabilitation council of India, various ministries, international society for prosthetics and orthotics and other international organisations, institutions and universities for short-term courses and research.

 

WHO WE ARE

 

Prosthetist and Orthotist are licensed health care professionals who diagnose and manage movement dysfunction and enhance physical and functional status in all age groups by means of prostheses and orthoses. An examination of individuals with impairments functional limitations and disabilities or health related conditions; prosthetists and Orthotists design individualized plans of prosthetic and orthotic care and services for each patient. Prosthetist and Orthotist alleviate impairments and functional limitations as well as promote and maintain optimal fitness, physical action and quality of life as it relates to movement and health. Prosthetists and Orthotists also implement services to reduce risk and prevent the onset and progression of impairments, functional limitations and disabilities that may result from injury, diseases, disorders and other health conditions.

 

WHAT WE DO

 

Prosthetists and Orthotists provide care to people of all ages who have functional problems resulting from for e.g., back and neck injuries, sprains, strains, fractures, arthritis, burns, amputation, stroke, multiple sclerosis, birth defects such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida, injuries related to work and sports. Prosthetic and Orthotic care and services are provided by prosthetists and orthotists. Prosthetists and Orthotists evaluate and diagnose movement dysfunction and use interventions to treat patients of all age groups. Interventions may include Lower limb orthoses, Spinal orthoses, Upper limb orthoses, Lower limb prostheses, Upper limb prostheses, Cosmetic restoration, Mobility aids etc.

 

WHERE WE PRACTICE

 

Prosthetists and Orthotists practice in hospitals, outpatient clinics or offices, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, home health settings, education institutions, research centers, industrial workplaces and other occupational environments.

 

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE

 

The minimum educational requirement to become a prosthetist and orthotist is a four and half year degree registered with rehabilitation council of India from recognized university. Few institutions offers master’s degree course also. After graduation, candidates must register with rehabilitation council of India to practice as prosthetist and orthotist, any where, in India.
